TRIBEathlon Podcast

Episode 66: Former professional cyclist and mentor to gold medal winning Olympians and Tour cyclists, Ricci Pascoe founded the St Piran professional cycling team 6 years ago. St Piran being the patron saint of Cornwall, their roots and heart is very much themed around Cornwall, but they now have a Continental team that allows them to compete with the big boys in races like The Tour of Britain.

I wanted to chat to Ricci about the origins of St Piran, why the Cornish roots are so important to this now national team, how they help cyclists from grass roots to pros and how he funds a team that doesn’t want a single deep pocketed sponsor.

What I’ve Been Reading

After his phenomenal success in the Olympics, I really wanted to read The Gladiator Mindset: Push Your Limits. Overcome Challenges. Achieve Your Goals, by Adam Peaty, and it didn’t disappoint. Whilst a lot of it could be found in other books that have been recommended here in the past, it is a wonderful read and a brilliant reminder of some of the most powerful principals in sport and mindset, in particular. Definitely worth a read.

News I’ve Been Keeping an Eye On

With everything that is going on between Russia and the Ukraine, it is difficult to see how Oligarchs like Roman Abramovich fit into the sporting picture. One of my favourite authors, Matthew Syed, gives a very interesting explanation of why and how they get there, and how this has impacted the game of football. You can watch it here.

What I’ve Been Watching

14 Peaks tells the incredible story of Nims, a fearless Nepali mountaineer who attempted to climb the 14 8000+ meter peaks of the world in just 7 months – the previous record being 7 years! An inspiring documentary with incredible footage of some of the world’s most beautiful and unreachable places.

TED Talk I’ve Found Interesting

Given what is happening in Russia and the Ukraine, a TED talk called The new political story that could change everything by George Monbiot can offer us some interesting insights. To get out of the mess we’re in, we need a new story that explains the present and guides the future, says author, Monbiot. Drawing on findings from psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary biology, he offers a new vision for society built around our fundamental capacity for altruism and cooperation. This contagiously optimistic talk will make you rethink the possibilities for our shared future.

Quote of the Week

“I was told that my plan was impossible. So, I decided to name it Project Possible.”

Finance Theme I’ve Been Considering

The markets hate uncertainty and President Putin is certainly bringing his fair share of uncertainty to them at the moment. The markets have fallen sharply, particularly on concerns the Ukraine invasion will have on fuel prices, but how does this affect your investment portfolio? Whilst the portfolio will of course fall when global markets fall, a properly diversified portfolio is designed to minimise that fall, whilst enjoying the gains when they return. Assets like gold, commodities, structured investments and bonds often do better when markets fall, as they are seen as a safe haven. As such, these underpin the portfolio, reducing the effect of a crash.

That is exactly what we are seeing now, the portfolio minimising the damage and leaving you poised to do well when the good times return, whether that be in 1 week, 1 month or 1 year. In the meantime, remember the saying; ‘time in the market is more important than timing the market’!
