TRIBEathlon Podcast
Episode 63: After success on the track, Charlie Spedding switched to marathons in 1984, winning both the London Marathon and a bronze medal in the LA Olympics – which was the first British Olympic marathon medal for 20 years, and the last won by Team GB, so the performance certainly did not get the recognition it deserved.
He tells the story of his running success in his brilliant book ‘From Last to First’, so I wanted to explore his approach to sports psychology, drinking beer and avoiding injuries later in your career. I also wanted to chat to him about his new book ‘Stop Feeding Us Lies’ and the myths of a healthy diet.
How I’ve Been Improving My Sleep
To steal the words of Matt Walker, if sleep isn’t important, it’s nature’s greatest mistake. Ensuring we have the optimum sleep can allow us to perform better for the rest of the time and understanding what impacts our sleep can give us the keys to optimum success.
Since Christmas, I have been wearing an Oura ring, and by observing trends and measuring aspects like my heart rate variability, I am starting to see what things impact my sleep and be more aware when I am not getting the right amount or quality needed to be at my best. Measuring your exercise is one thing but understanding how much recovery you need is also vital to success, and the Oura Ring definitely helps me do that.
If you decide to order, click this link and the first 3 people will get 50 USD/EUR off and 6-month FREE Oura Membership, as well as better measuring of your sleep quality!
What I’ve Been Watching
At the back of previous book recommendation, The Everyday Hero Manifesto, Robin Sharma lists his 25 favourite books, documentaries and films. As I diligently went through each adding those of interest to my reading/watch list, I was introduced to a documentary called Some Kind of Monster. As a metal head in my teens, I was a big Metallica fan, but that phase petered out at university, so this film had passed me by.
What was supposed to be a 2 week gate-crash of Metallica recording their next album, it ended up being filmed from 2001-2003, a time of tension and release for the world’s most successful rock band. As they recorded their album St. Anger, they fought bitterly, checked into rehab, lost a band member and sought the counsel of their on-call shrink. The film crew were there at the right time and right place, and what was created is a brilliant insight into their lives! Having watched this, I went on to also watch Through the Never; part zombie film, part live gig, it is like nothing else I’ve ever seen. If you like their music, I highly recommend this too.
What I’ve Been Reading
Charlie Spedding, the guest on the TRIBEathlon podcast and author of previous recommendation From Last to First, has released a new book, Stop Feeding Us Lies; a somewhat controversial look at the myths around what is classed as a healthy diet. One thing is for sure, this book helps dispel a lot of the nonsense around healthy eating. I have yet to find a better researched book on food.
If you are intrigued, I suggest you listen to the TRIBEathlon podcast episode mentioned above to give you an idea of what to expect.

Goal Setting
At the start of each year, I religiously work through a process to create the best goals possible for the year ahead. This year I revamped that process through the help of the book ‘The Everyday Hero Manifesto’ and the podcast ‘Achieve Your Goals’. I also spent an afternoon with my team helping them create their goals for the year ahead.
I recorded the meeting, and have created a video for you, so that you too can create amazing goals for 2022 and beyond, which you can watch here and you can find the Limitless Life Planner I refer to in the video at the bottom of the page here. You can thank me this time next year.
