I want to ask you something most goal-setting exercises never do: what happens if you don't change anything?

Not in a vague, "I should really sort that out" way. I mean specifically- five years from now, ten years from now, what does your business, your health, your relationships actually look like if you carry on exactly as you are?

Most of us avoid that question entirely. We'd rather write a vision board than sit with a worst-case scenario. But here's the problem with only ever focusing on the upside: it doesn't create urgency. You can set the most inspiring goal in the world in January and have quietly abandoned it by March, because nothing was actually at stake. No consequence, no cost of inaction, no real reason today has to be different from yesterday.

This is why so many ambitious professionals get stuck in what I'd call motivation without momentum. Plenty of enthusiasm, plenty of good intentions, precious little follow-through. And every abandoned goal chips away a bit more at your belief that you're someone who actually does the things you say you'll do.

There's a tool that flips this entirely on its head, and it's one of the most useful (if uncomfortable) exercises I've come across. It's called Fear Setting, popularised by Tim Ferriss and rooted in the same territory as the "ghost of Christmas future" moment in A Christmas Carol- the idea that sometimes the clearest way to see what you want is to look unflinchingly at what you're trying to avoid.

How it works

Rather than starting with your goals, you start with your fears, worked through methodically across the areas of life that matter most: your career, your relationships, your health, your finances, your personal growth, how you actually spend your time.

For each of those areas, you ask three questions:

First, if you change nothing, what's the realistic, worst case in five, ten, twenty years? Not a vague worry- get specific. Write it down properly.

Second, what would that actually cost you? Not just to you, but to the people around you- your partner, your children, your team, your clients.

Third, and this is the part that matters, what could you do right now to stop that outcome from happening?

That last question is where the exercise earns its keep. It's not there to frighten you into paralysis. It's there to turn a fear that's been sitting quietly in the back of your mind, undefined, unaddressed, into something concrete enough to actually act on.

A practical example

Say one of your fears is that your business never grows beyond you and that in ten years you're still trading time for money, still the bottleneck in every decision, and you've missed the years when your children were young because you were always "too busy" to be fully present.

That's not a comfortable sentence to write. It's not supposed to be. But once it's written down, it stops being a vague background anxiety and becomes something you can build a plan against, whether that's finally delegating the work only you think only you can do, blocking out non-negotiable time with your family, or bringing in the right support to build a business that doesn't depend entirely on you.

Why this matters more than another goals worksheet

The uncomfortable truth is that fear is a far stronger motivator than aspiration alone. It's wired into us. The trick isn't to suppress it or pretend it isn't there; it's to define it precisely enough that it stops being able to hide, and instead becomes fuel.

Done properly, Fear Setting doesn't leave you anxious. It leaves you clear. Clear on why your goals actually matter, clear on what inaction is really costing you, and clear on the specific next step that changes the trajectory.

If you've been quietly circling a change in your business or your life without ever quite making it, a fresh strategy, a different way of working, a decision you keep putting off, it might be worth sitting down with a blank page and trying this properly. Not to scare yourself. To finally see clearly enough to act.
