What I’ve Been Watching

King Richard” is a biographical drama that showcases the remarkable story of Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. The film draws parallels with the life of László Polgár, a Hungarian chess teacher and educational psychologist, renowned for training his daughters – Zsuzsa, Zsófia, and Judit – to become world class chess prodigies. Like Polgár, Richard Williams demonstrates the effectiveness of Anders Ericson’s research on 10,000 hours of deliberate practice.

The movie highlights Richard’s hands-on approach in coaching Venus and Serena from the tough streets of Compton to the pinnacle of tennis. This journey mirrors Polgár’s methodical and intensive training of his daughters, leading Judit and Zsuzsa to become the world’s best and second-best female chess players. Both fathers demonstrate an unwavering belief in their children’s abilities, coupled with a strategy to shield them from early burnout and external pressures. “King Richard” eloquently captures the essence of parental dedication, perseverance, and the transformative power of nurturing exceptional talent within a family environment.

Quote of the Week

“The only way to fail is to not try. If you have a goal to get to the stars and you fall short, you still hit the moon. By setting massive goals, whether you hit them all or not is not the important thing; it is about achieving so much more than you would have done otherwise. When you look back, you can beat yourself up for missing the bits you didn’t do, or you can celebrate the success of what you did.”
