As we edge closer to spring and the lighter mornings begin to tease us, it feels like a good time to think about what’s going on beneath the surface. In nature, in business, and in our own bodies, the foundations matter. What if the real breakthroughs this year don’t come from doing more… but from understanding and optimising what’s already there?
Podcast: Tim Spector on DOAC
I found this conversation with Tim Spector fascinating. The impact we can have on our long-term health — including our risk of dementia — through improving our microbiome is mind blowing. We often think of health as something that declines inevitably with age, but Spector makes a compelling case that what we eat, how diverse our diet is, and how we look after our gut can dramatically influence our future brain and body.
For anyone who wants sustained energy, sharper thinking and resilience under pressure, this is essential listening. We obsess over marginal gains in training or marketing funnels, yet the ecosystem inside our gut may be one of the biggest levers we can pull. A simple shift towards more fibre, more diversity and less ultra-processed food could quite literally change the trajectory of your later years.
Reading: Essentialism – Greg McKeown
This book was a timely reminder that just because we can do something, doesn’t mean we should. McKeown’s core message — that we must rigorously focus on what is truly essential and eliminate the rest — hit home for me.
It’s very easy to fill our days with noise: emails, meetings, opportunities, “urgent” tasks. The disciplined pursuit of less forces you to ask, “What really moves the needle?” In business, that might be the 20% of clients or activities generating 80% of results. In fitness, it might be nailing sleep, strength and consistency rather than chasing every new protocol on Instagram.
There’s a quiet power in saying no. This book helps you do it without guilt — and with far greater impact.
TED: Alison Ledgerwood: A Simple Trick to Improve Positive Thinking
Why do our brains cling to the negative? Ledgerwood explains that it’s not because we’re broken — it’s because we’re wired that way. The real insight is that positive thinking isn’t about blind optimism; it’s about consciously retraining your focus.
Her practical suggestion is beautifully simple: when something goes wrong, don’t just flip it to a positive and move on. Deliberately revisit the positive interpretation. Repeat it. Strengthen it.
In high performance environments — whether that’s race day or a tough quarter in business — this matters. One bad session or one lost deal can dominate your thinking. The ability to reset, reframe and refocus is a competitive advantage.
Watching: Remember the Titans
Based on real events, this story of a divided American football team brought together under new leadership is powerful viewing. What I loved most wasn’t just the victories — it was how the coaches brought the best out of each player. Two very different leaders, forced together. A group of individuals who don’t initially trust one another. Sound familiar?
It’s a reminder that culture is built intentionally. Standards matter. Unity matters. And great leadership isn’t about being liked — it’s about raising people’s belief in what they’re capable of. Whether you’re building a team in the office or pushing training partners to new levels, the principles are the same.
Tech: Perplexity AI
If you haven’t explored Perplexity yet, it’s worth a look. It’s an AI-powered answer engine that provides real-time, cited research and summaries. What I like most is the speed and clarity. Instead of trawling through endless tabs, you can get concise, sourced answers quickly. For decision-making, research, or sense-checking an idea, it’s incredibly efficient. Used well, tools like this reduce friction. They give you back time — and time, as we all know, is one of the few truly non-renewable resources.

How to Get AI Running Your Business Backstage
If Tim Spector teaches us anything, it’s that what happens beneath the surface determines long-term performance. The same is true in business.
Behind every polished client experience is a messy world of admin, follow-ups, onboarding, proposals and processes. And for many entrepreneurs, that backstage work becomes the bottleneck.
In this upcoming webinar, I will show you how AI can take over a huge proportion of those hidden operational tasks. From auditing which processes AI can handle today, to building custom assistants that house your SOPs and answer team questions, this is about creating a business that runs smoothly — even when you’re not in the room.
It’s not about using AI to write social media posts. It’s about embedding intelligence into your operations so that onboarding happens automatically, follow-ups never get missed, and workflows run 24/7.
If you’ve ever felt that your business depends too heavily on you, this could be a pivotal 90 minutes. Because just like your health, if the foundations are strong, growth becomes far more sustainable.
Inspiring Quote – “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practised every day.” – Jim Rohn
Whether it’s your microbiome, your mindset, your team culture or your business systems, the real breakthroughs often happen quietly and out of sight. Strengthen the foundations now, and the visible results will take care of themselves.
